If I were to listen on my $500.00 over-ear headphones or my lighter $300.00 ones, I would bet the better 128k stereo, but its really more like back-ground stuff so its plenty good enough at 24k. When I listen to music, on my multi-thousand dollar stereo popped up to a couple hundred watts a side, to, like Judas Priest's new stuff [dl'd as FLAC] making the windows vibrate and even melting some snow, there is a difference. But Stern is just audio, not like an orchestra. I even set up a set of speakers in the washroom so I can listen while taking a shit and/or shower. I thought I was complimenting you on how good your 24k was, because some others is very bad. Only problem is too many choose the bare bones so I don't make up the ratio unless I get to it very early. So don't worry, I love you...in a manly let's go nuke a country sort of way

Not so much the talk (as speech has a limited freq. range), but the music in/out of the breaks. You can tell that Playboy's averaging between 32-64k via Sat., and I believe 32k constant via web.

22nd Jan, 7:08pm	lennynero: the only real time you'd go from a lossy 128k format to the lossless wav format would be to burn audio CD's of mp3's. In which case you can indeed hear the difference, but not enough to really turn anyone away. FWIW, I archive all my music @ 192k mp3 and all my stern @ 64k mp3. The greater bitrate on the music results in a better sounding audio CD, but I can't imagine why you'd do that for a 5hr stern show (would take about 4 CD's @ 74mins each)

Basically consider making a waterpipe the size of a straw, then deciding to 'upgrade' to a 5' diameter pipe and sending the same amout of water as before. All that open space is just unused space that catches the occasional splash. In the digital world, those occasional splashes turn into noise, ultimately degrading the overall quality.

Listening to the 64k rip via iPhone -> AUX on my car stereo sounds just as good as the direct SIRI input on the same stereo, however, the music channels sound just as good as the 128k webstream.

I've not had issue with iTunes, iPhone, or older (pre-Video) iPods, but I have read some reports here about some iPods not playing VBR properly. I think it's mostly due to the encoding and not so much the chosen format. Some encoders do VBR better than others, and likewise some decoders have issues doing playback.

There is a slight difference between 96k and 128k. I swear there is. Not as big as between 96k and 80k, which gives credence to your argument. But the idea that we compromise now for a 24% reduction in file size seems silly. Storage is cheap. A month of shows would be 5gb at 128k and 3.8gb at 96k. Peanuts in my world at $.10 a gb for storage. All of you are welcome to save the files as you see fit. They are yours now. I have yet to see a valid reason for reducing the bit rate.

22nd Jan, 2:49pm	lennynero: info I've compiled over the last couple years from various net searches. Sound tests pretty much confirm, as the 48k webstream sounds just as good as CT's 64k rips (and even then you can hear some "ringing" introduced due to the 16k of overhead).
22nd Jan, 2:48pm	lennynero: PAC4 is a spinoff of AAC (what iTunes uses), so the bitrates are a little different....I suppose a 128-160k music stream would benefit from a 128k encoding (which is what the Siri prem. webstream is), but Stern won't really benefit from anything greater than 96k, as there's not a lot of variation in the signal (not much real high quality music played on his channels). Bubba/Riley, etc are a bit different, as they're broadcasting over a bonded ISDN (128k) line and can't send encoded data greater than 96k due to overhead. Due to the VBR, most the talk stations fluctuate between 48-96k, averaging ~64k most of the time.

Music channels max @ 160k (mostly classical/electronic stations), average ~90-130k. Talk stations are 32-48k, and Stern maxes @ 96k. The only way to get a good 128k stream would be to grab the 192k mpeg2 stream off DishNet, but they only carry the music channels.

I thought my router was fooked, but the files were coming in at 1mb/s. As soon as the download stopped, bittorrent sped up. In the past, download has always been compromised when uploading.
